Maria knew something was wrong when she tumbled onto mahogany hardwood floors and a red carpet that looked Persian. Her family didn't own such nice things but that didn't matter when her throat burned and heaved after vomiting the contents of her stomach onto it. Immediately someone came in, cleaning the spot and leaving before she could render her bearings enough to breath normally, let alone speak.

Stumbling over her feet with shaking legs, she made her way away from the silk laden four-poster bed into the bathroom: a sand-colored tiled room with a large walk in shower and even bigger vanity. She made her way to the sink, filling a blue-tinted glass with water, taking a shaky sip. Where the hell am I?, she thought to herself. She had no clue what to do with herself at this point, but the window from her bedroom was calling her name.

Standing at the large crystalline pane, she looked out over the house. As she brushed her fingers through her honey hair, her mind raced and wondered, noticing the stripe of blue just below the horizon: the sea. Maria lived a ways away from an ocean, hailing from Dallas proper. So why was she seeing the ocean now? Oh God. Oh no.
              -

Thomas was bored out of his mind.  Did they really expect him to just sit there all day and wait for his soon to be wife to awake?  he was intrigued immediately by her looks, hence why he had chosen her.  Well - besides the fact that she was the only one out of her group to have hips of any form of strength.  He knew the others most likely were killed off after his black luxury sedan sped away, but he didn't particularly care; this world was for the healthy and for the hopeful - there was no space for those who were worthless. He still didn't know how his father expected him to fall in love with this woman - or maybe he wouldn't - and produce one child or more to possibly save their world from the endless destruction that was happening now.  Generation after generation was dying off now, with only twenty-five years to their names at the most.

She was young. He knew that when he laid eyes on her, and while under any other circumstances he'd have turned his nose up at her, she was young, and time was everything. She had a good few years left of her, enough to have a few children, and that was all that mattered. To Sawyer and his father, at least. The family name—God bless it—couldn't die with he and his brother, conquered by the disease that couldn't be killed by an antidote. That girl, young though she was, would be part of the reason the Heronsby name lived on. Her age wouldn't matter in the big scheme of things. They'd be dead in five years, anyway. According to his father, it was best not to intrude or wake up the girl, rather, he should let her wake and find her way out on her own. Regardless, he hoped she did so soon. Sawyer was a man of meager patience.

          -

To her credit, she knew she was a helluva lot smarter than the type of girl it took to let the man wake up first and leave. Before the memories of the night before flooded back, and before she had her bearinggs straight, she knew something wasn't right. Vivian Pyre was always gone before the other awoke. It was a rule of thumb—something she held fast to, and one of her only rules, at that. The others were reserved for what remained of her compromised morals. The dark-haired girl slid from the bed, which was oddly comfortable and a tad too luxurious for an average joe, and padded across the dark carpet to the window. Land stretched for miles, but not a city in sight. Then, she was back in the gray van, stubbornly refusing to cry even though most of those around her were, and she remembered. Right. The Pyre girl fumbled with the latch on the window and tried to open it, but no amount of strength she put into it rewarded her any results. She tried the door next, and scoffed when she found it locked from the outside. Trapped. Like some sort of caged animal. Growing furious and desperate, the girl plucked her shoe from the plush floor and launched it at the window, narrowing her brown eyes when it simply fell to the floor, the window unscathed. She glanced around for something a little heavier, but saw only a lamp, and figured that was probably some kind of indestructible, too. Infuriating. The knife in her back pocket was gone, as was everything else she had, and so she waited alongside the door emptyhanded and arms crossed, waiting for someone or something to open it.

She remembered her mother telling her curiosity killed the cat when she was young, before Anetta died from a gunshot to the head. They were robbing the house when Maria's mother came home just a bit too early from work. She didn't stand a chance - at least, that's what her daughter told herself. To this day she lives - lived with her father in small apartment in the metropolitan area of Dallas. The city ran rampant with crime and kidnappings, and to her misfortune Maria was now a captive.

The shuffling of feet from the girls in front of her flashed back into her head, emerging into the light after what seemed to be a lifetime in the dark hell. Little did she know that her hell was only beginning. Maria remembers with a pang of hate, being poked and prodded and inspected like livestock. It wasn't long until she was left as only one of two standing as the other girls were herded away and out of sight.

Not caring to dwell on the subject any longer than she already had, other thoughts pushed forward. I'm going to be one of those brides, she thought, panicking as she looked at the dark hardwood door across the room. Maria vaguely remembered her father telling her about these brides and their spouses. They were rich, filthy rich. And by looking around the room, she could tell whoever owned this palace was certainly that.

The brides were expected to produce children - multiple by expectation. Partially to carry on family names, but also as a hope to find some relief to the outstanding numbers of perishing men and women. Maria didn't want to have children though, not at fifteen. She was still a child herself for God's sake! How could expect her to carry one for nine months without relief?

              -

Thomas was tired of waiting, his whole body telling him to go and wake the girl that he had chosen to now be his wife and mother of his offspring. But he couldn't Not without his father's disapproving looks flashing in the back of his mind. Yes he was twenty-one but that didn't mean he didn't care what his father thought. So he sat and he waited. There was something in his gut telling him that the girl would be out soon, but he wasn't totally sure.

Eventually, Sawyer grew sick of waiting. "Send her domestic up to get her. I think I heard running water, so she's up." He knew the gas made the girls sleep for several hours, but this long? The Heronby man knew better. The door was locked—she couldn't get out—and it wasn't like she was going to knock and cheerfully announce that she'd woken up.

The servant hurried off to find the girl's domestic, and he turned to look at his father. "I wanted to marry Cara." Still bitter over the loss of the woman he'd truly wanted as a wife, Sawyer licked his lips and tried to prevent himself from glaring at the older man. "Yes, but if you had, she'd be on her deathbed as we speak."

And somewhere out there, she was.

          -

Vivian finally got tired of waiting, and started pacing the room. She didn't want to scream; that'd seem weak. She didn't want to knock; she didn't need to ask for permission. Her brown gaze settled on the lamp again, and in an effort to take out her frustrations and draw attention to the fact that she was awake and angry, she unplugged the lamp and hurled it at the wall, watching the pretty little glass object smash and fall to the floor in a pile of glittering, sharp debris.

If shattering glass didn't bring someone up to check out the situation and unlock the door, nothing would. The Pyre girl picked up the shoe she'd thrown earlier, her only weapon—if it could even be considered such. She should've known better than to do business with the man in the dark jacket. How had she not seen the grey shirt peeking out from beneath his overcoat until he was too close for her to fend off?

The Gatherer was actually rather smart, taking an approach no others had tried on her before, but just like not only the other Gatherers, but men in general, he was a pig. Weren't they all?

When Maria heard the doorknob to the dark wooden door she ran for the hills.  Well, her bed actually.  She slipped into the covers, not wanting to risk the chance of trouble for being out of them.  She watched as a girl came in, possibly a few years younger than her.

"Hello, Maria", the young girl grinned at her, "My name's Leila.  I'm your domestic."  As the girl introduced herself, the future bride became more and more concerned, wondering why she was even here.  "Now come dear", dear?, "your fiance would like to see you."  The girl had an ear to ear grin on her face, almost like she enjoyed this.  Maria couldn't refuse, knowing she had to leave the bed or be dragged from it.

As she stood, Matthews noticed the lace and silk slip she must've been wearing for awhile.  And apparently the domestic noticed too.  "Oh no, no."  the little girl pulled her into the enormous closet attached to her room, containing every item of clothing a girl could ever want.  "Here", she handed Maria a more a appropriate dress.  This one was peach and came to her mid-thigh instead of the sultry-seeming slip.  The dress was one of the skater variety, slim-fitting through the bodice, skirt flaring out at her waist.

Not another second was wasted as she was whisked away and out of her room, seeing the mansion for the first time.  The floor was hardwood much like the one in her room, the walls an emerald color with paintings and pictures decorating the hall to the elevator.  As Maria stepped inside, her heart raced, knowing who'd be on the other side when she reached the bottom.  She absentmindedly brushed her hand through her hair, her cerulean eyes flicking back in forth in anxiety.  Ding.  Dear Gd, help me now.

              -

Thomas could easily hear his brother and father talking across the large sitting room, rolling his eyes in the process.  When would his brother ever get over that girl?  Father had told him long ago it wouldn't happen, couldn't happen and he seemed to not have drop the subject since.  Personally, he had few women in his life, none of romantic interest.  Well, there was one.  But she was long, long gone by now; she had moved on to a different family, married to another man.  He didn't know where she was now, but that didn't particularly bother him.

As soon as he heard the shattering glass her sent someone to retrieve his soon-to-be wife.  "She has to be awake by now.  Go retrieve her for me, please", he told the nearest servant, a woman.  He hadn't much patience left in him, his curiosity wearing thin.  He wanted to see her up close, not just from a distance on a gravelly road in the middle of nowhere.

He didn't even knew her name. He just knew she'd been the best pick of the bunch, except, perhaps, for his brother's choice. She seemed rather young, too, though maybe a year or so older, and if Thomas hadn't taken her, he certainly would've. Probably vice versa, if he had to guess. Regardless, he'd made his choice, and his brother's girl wasn't up yet, either, which gave him some patience for his own girl. Maybe it wasn't just her. Maybe the other had reacted just the same.

"How old is she?" He asked his father, whose nose was stuck in a book about some old war neither he nor his brother had been alive to witness. "Fifteen. And Thomas's, sixteen." Each five years apart. Sawyer would die around the same time as his wife. However, he found no solace in that fact. Five years was hardly enough; he was a time bomb. It hardly seemed fair. In making mankind more or less immune to disease, their ancestors had robbed their children, grandchildren, and anyone who was unfortunate enough to come after of a future that lasted more than a measly twenty to twenty-five years.

Sickening. The twenty-year old straightened up a little when he thought he heard the elevator doors open, shooting a glance at his father.

          -

The door opened shortly after, revealing a woman about her age, probably a servant. Vivian stood her ground, but didn't throw the shoe like she'd initially intended. "Your presence is requested downstairs." Of course. She was used to her "presence" being sought after. That "presence" and what all too often came with it was, unfortunately, how she made her living. "By whom?" The blonde had already drawn a dark blue dress and brown sandals from the closet, laying the garment on the bed and the sandals on the floor.

"By the House Governor, your fiancé." The girl stepped forward to help her out of the lace slip she hadn't realized she was wearing, but Vivian waved her away, saying, "I can dress myself just fine." Not a shy girl even without her experiences, the Pyre girl changed into the dress, if only for the sake of not walking around in what was basically lingerie.

Her anger hadn't dissipated; the servant girl hadn't brought her here, the man who wished to see her had, and she saw no point in taking her anger out prematurely on a girl who hadn't wronged her. So she pulled the sandals on and ran a hand through her hair, frowning slightly when the blonde ran a brush through it, and followed her out into the hallway, her eyes brown flames. "Don't worry about the lamp. That'll be cleaned up and replaced." She hadn't been, but Vivian said nothing, stepping into the elevator and glaring at the doors on the way down. When they opened, she trailed the girl into a large sitting room, her expression neutral for the time being.

Maria took a deep breath as the doors of the elevator opened, the girl's hands shaking with nerves. She had no clue what to do. Should she shake his hand? Hug him? Kiss him? It wasn't like there were etiquette courses on how to address your husband you would be marrying the next day after being kidnapped and turned into a child bride! This whole situation wasn't going to be easy for her nor did she want to be a vessel for a child of a man she barely knew.

As the doors opened, Matthew's domestic lead the way out, the fifteen year old following behind with her canvas shoes softly padding against the hardwood sitting room floor. "Sir, this is Maria", the small girl told the young man in front of them. "She will be your wife."

Those last words deeply bothered Maria, but she wouldn't let it show on her face. "Hello", she grinned, masking her discomfort with a grin and shining blue eyes. She didn't dare try to lift a hand to shake with his as her hands were doing precisely that: shaking. To keep them from doing that too obviously, she clasped them in front of her as an attempt to hide the shaking, which worked fairly well in her case.

"It's nice to meet you." No it's not. The domestic left almost immediately. She couldn't hate the man in front of her - he wasn't the one to kidnap her and steal her away from the life that she loved wholeheartedly. But he was the one who bought her, pulling her into a life of luxurious slavery. As if a marriage would make it more acceptable.

              -

Thomas laid eyes on his newly purchased love for the second time, taking in her chocolate colored hair and eyes in detail this time around, her pink lips noticeable too. Coming to his feet, smoothing out the black slacks he wore. Along with the slacks he looked dashingly sharp, his baby blue-and-white pinstriped oxford shirt's sleeves rolled up to just below his elbows.

He grinned warmly at the girl, not wanting to scare her away in the first few minutes of interaction. He didn't know her or her name, but he would soon. "Well hello there."

Sawyer plastered a smile on his face, taking in the sight of his bride and bringing her hand to his lips. "The pleasure is all mine, miss." Sort of. She wasn't a Cara—that was for sure—but she was rather pretty, even up close, which was something many girls tended to fall short on. Her blonde hair and blue eyes complemented each other, and he found he'd made a good choice.

His father would never let either of them have ugly wives. And looking at his elder brother's wife across the room, Sawyer knew he hadn't failed either of them. "I'm Sawyer, and this is my father, Housemaster Harrison." He gestured to his father, though he wasn't keen on the idea of staying so cheerful and proper, but supposed it was necessary—at least for a few days. "Shall I show you around?" His father had disappeared, and the twenty year old could only imagine that he had other, more important things to attend to.

          *

The man was handsome, something she hadn't expected. Rich men who had to buy wives, she imagined, along with her usual customers, weren't very attractive. That was why they had to pay. But this man surely would've had his pick among better women than orphans and girls like her. Why, then, had he picked from a group of stragglers? The man smoothed his slacks and approached, and she held her ground, but pursed her lips slightly.

Did he think everything was okay? That she was dazzled, flattered, relieved? Ecstatic, maybe? She'd bet the idea that she might be angry hadn't even crossed his mind. "Hello," She offered no indication of being pissed, and none of being thrilled, figuring she should feel him out before she did anything major. Across the sitting room, another man appeared to be meeting a blonde girl. The other one that survived the Gatherers. "I'm assuming you're the House Governor?"

Maria wasn't going to lie. Her fiance was awfully attractive for a man his age, and kind - respectful, too - it seemed. But she wondered if it was an act much like the one she was putting on. She wondered how he'd really be acting in a week's time. Would he still be this friendly, this pleasant by that time?

No matter, the girl accepted the invitation. "If it isn't too much of a bother, I would love it", she nodded with a small grin after acknowledging the Housemaster with a short, curtsy like dip. She didn't know if that was how she supposed to respond to him, but it didn't matter at this point - he was already gone by the time her soon-to-be husband asked to give a tour.

The Matthews girl was more than curious about this home, dying to see the outside. From her window she could see far into the distance, not another home in sight it seemed. Before the horizon she saw spectacular gardens and groves, bursting with colors a rainbow would even envy. Flowers, trees, shrubs grew as far as she could see to the left and right, never-ending it seemed. But in the back of Maria's head, she wondered just how much of the mansion and its elaborate garden he would really show her.

              -

"Ah, yes. But you can call be Thomas. Thomas Heronby", he grinned down at her, his stance not rigid or taut showing he was relaxed in the moment. "I'm sure you're aware of this by now, but you are my wife. Or will be, at least." He said those last words carefully, trying to gauge the girl's position on the situation. But he realized he was missing some crucial information.

"Now forgive me dear, but what is your name?" He needed to that before anything else; figuring a way to address a person without knowing their name was quite tricky, and the governor wasn't up for that now.

Sawyer offered her his arm, and once she'd taken it, he lead her through the house, pointing out the different rooms. "That was the sitting room," He took her into a room down the hall, with a high ceiling and shelves that were so tall a ladder was needed to browse the selection at the very top. "Here's the library," He gave the girl some time to take it in before taking her into the elevator. The blond pressed the ground floor button, stepping back and directing his attention at his fiancé.

"You're very pretty." He reached out, sliding a strand of her blonde hair between his fingers. Women, he knew, loved flattery, especially the younger variety. Compliments were always the best way to win their affections, not that this one had much of a choice. "You'll make a fine wife." Or atleast, he hoped so. Otherwise, he'd have to get rid of her and his father would have to but another. He only had five years left; he had no time to waste on a stubborn young girl.

The doors opened and he stepped out, waiting for her to follow.

          *

Vivian nodded, brown eyes drifting around the room instead of meeting his. She was too angry to respond. She was used to being bought, but she'd always had a choice in the matter. She'd gotten to pick and choose who she sold herself to, but now, the man had not only gotten what he'd wanted, but he'd made a profit, too. A marriage was too permanent; she didn't know Thomas Heronby, and didn't want to.

The Pyre girl figured she had no choice but to supply her name. "Vivian. Vivian Pyre," He called her dear and she resisted the urge to cringe. He didn't even know her name, and he was already acting like they'd been happily married for years. Vivian watched him with wild chocolate eyes, distrust mingling with hatred in their depth. This man had no idea what she'd been through just to see the light of the next day, but she couldn't help but feel outraged. She'd done everything she told herself she'd never do just to stay independent and free for the remainder of her short life, and the customer in gray and the man standing in front of her had ruined her efforts singlehandedly.

Post by luna Fri Feb 28, 2014 10:32 pm

Maria's eyes filled with wondered as they walked through the halls, so many questions filling her mind. Though she decided to keep quiet for the time being, not wanting to give her fiance the idea she was nosy and interrogative. But as soon as she saw the library a huge grin burst onto her face, her eyes looking of that of a kid in a candy shop. She loved to read, and admittedly, to be read to by her father. When she was a little girl, he would always read to her before bed each night - usually classic novels and not children's books.

Once they made it into the elevator, Sawyer turned to her and her heart stopped. She had never been alone with a boy, let alone been in love with one, so by nature she blushed at the compliment. It was obvious too as she was on the lighter-skinned side of the skin tone spectrum, her cheeks and ears turning a bashful shade of pink. "Thank you", she looked up at him through her dark, long lashes a small, somehwat genuine grin on her face.

But that's when he made the 'fine wife' comment. Oh Lord. Did she really have a choice? No. Plain and simple, no. It was either do as your told or you were removed from the household, whether that be discarded into prostitution, slavery (more than likely the same thing) or killed with a bullet to the head. She didn't exactly want either so her only option was to agree to any terms presented, whether she honestly liked them or not.

As the doors of the elevator opened, Maria followed behind the House Governor noticing that the gardens were just outside of the wall of windows now. She wanted to see those more than anything, as her hometown had practically dried up in drought, grass turned to dirt and trees turned to dehydrated sticks. This to her, was paradise in the truest form.

              -

"What a lovely name, Miss Vivian", Thomas told her with grin. "It has been a delight to make your acquaintance, madame." He took her hand in his, pressing a kiss against the back of it. He followed his brother's example, noticing how the girl willingly took his arm as they left the sitting room.

"Would you care for a tour of the estate?", he asked kindly, offering his arm to her. Thomas hoped she would take it, wanting to know her better before they would marry in a day's time. God, could you imagine that? Marrying someone you just met only to make it slightly more acceptable to use for the carrying of their heirs to the family fortune?

He grinned down at her, taking her briefly through the kitchen. "Here's the kitchen, though you and the other wife won't be allowed on any floor other than your floor without an escort." Sawyer slipped a rule in as he went, pushing out the door and into the outside world of sunshine and explosions of color in the form of flowers and trees.

"The garden, which is probably the best part." For the women, anyway. He only liked it as a place to think, and there was a pool for swimming, but that was all the appeal the luxurious garden had to him. It was nice, but a bit too colorful for his liking most of the time. It tended to give him a headache. Even without knowing her at all, he had a feeling this, and maybe the library, would be his wife's favorite parts of the house. "Do you like it? It's pretty bright. But it's refreshing sometimes."

          *

The girl watched him kiss her hand, seemingly imitating the other man's gestures in the hopes of getting her to be as compliant as the blonde girl. The entire ordeal seemed horribly fake; he was far too proper. She offered him a weak smile, lacking any real pleasure, and let her gaze fall to his shoulders. She wasn't going to be one of those wives that were perfectly content in the situation they'd been forced into. She hadn't given up so much, degraded herself so much, just to end up in another, more ultimately degrading and compromising situation.

The brunette stubbornly refused to take his arm, the fire in her brown eyes rekindling. "I think I can find my way on my own, thank you." The other couple and the Housemaster were gone, leaving the two completely alone in the huge sitting room. No longer pressured to behave in the presence of others, the Pyre girl took a step back. "A charming offer, and a charming estate, I'm sure, but I'm afraid I must decline."

Maria's interest was sparked when Sawyer told her she could not venture anywhere but the floor she resided on. What was there she couldn't see on her own? What were they hiding from her and the other wife? All valid questions really, but like before, the bride kept her mouth shut.

"I love it", she grinned, stepping up to one of the tall hedge-like bushes with bright pink flowers. She took one between her fingers but did not pluck it from the bush, going onto her toes to take in the sweet scent of the flower with a small grin. She loved the nature around her as there was none at home. "Nothing like this grows - grew at home." She quickly corrected herself, knowing she probably wouldn't see her home or farther ever again.

"Where are we, exactly? Geographically, I mean", she pondered. Plants didn't grow like this anywhere near where she did, and by the books she red they didn't grow in the Midwest either. So they had to have been on one of the coasts, towards the southern end with all the tropical plant life that seemed to grow.

              -

Thomas furrowed his brow at the refusal of his offer. "If you insist, miss", he graciously agreed, though his pride was slightly hurt. Why would she turn him down? It wasn't like there was anywhere else she could go without him or some servant by her side. No matter, he smiled on, taking the declination in stride. She wouldn't be able to tell him no for much longer.

"Just remember that you cannot go anywhere else on the estate without someone escorting you. Whether it be me or a servant of sorts - your domestic would work too." He waited there for a moment, seeing if the girl'd change her mind with the new information or still hold her ground with her previous reply.

Sawyer watched her with undisguised interest as she approached a hedge and examined the pink bud with a gentleness only a girl her age could muster. He made a mental note to have a servant bring some of the flowers she seemed to like best up to her room later, figuring the more she liked him now, the better off he'd be later. "Where was home?" The Gatherers never bothered telling buyers names of the girls or where they were taken from; they probably didn't even know or care, and for good reason. Most were killed or sold into prostitution if not picked.

"Florida. Something tells me you've never come remotely close," The blond observed, a pleasant smirk on his face. Her awe was expected; most people who had never seen Florida before reacted that way their first time. He almost wished he hadn't been born there so that he could see what he was missing—what they saw. To him, the bright colors and exotic plants were normal, commonplace.

          *

"Fair enough," The restriction was enough to make her consider joining him, but she realized she didn't care enough for the luxuries of her prison to walk around with a man who'd ruined everything she'd worked to have. The brunette stayed where she was, waiting for the man to say more or to walk away. His pride was probably wounded, but she couldn't find it in her to care except for the repercussions. Her pride was wounded every day for the first few months until she got used to things, but it was hard to be empathetic with a man who had forced her into a marriage and then seemed taken aback when she wasn't as enthusiastic as he wanted her to be.

"A domestic?" She cocked an eyebrow, thoroughly confused. "May I ask what you mean by that?" It sounded like some sort of house servant, possibly hers personally, but she had little interest in being waited on. Still, she waited for his response neutrally, as if she hadn't just rejected a walk with him within the first ten seconds of knowing him. Despite knowing what might happen because of it, Vivian Pyre was unapologetic.

The girl looked over at Sawyer before turning her attention back to the bushes ahead and their brightly colored flowers. "Dallas . . . Texas", Maria replied, looking up at him. "Everything there is either dead or dirt. This . . . this garden, at least, is everything I could've dreamed of it seems." This was her prison, and she knew it too, but she could at least try to enjoy it, this garden, if nothing else.

"I've never been away from home before." She looked at the ground. She kept saying 'home' like Dallas is where she'd live forever, but she knew there'd be no way she'd ever return home. This is where she'd spend her last five years with Sawyer, and then die when the time came. And on that topic of death, she wondered about her finace's age. "How old are, exactly?", she questioned, her brows furrowed together.

              -

"Oh that's right. My apologies, madam", Thom apologized before answering. "Your domestic is like a servant, but she will help you specifically with dressing, doing your hair - things like that." The one thing he had to remember was this girl had not lived a life like him, probably spending most of it in poverty like the other 99-percent of the world.

His life was one of rarity. Not many lived the way he did, but the ones who did, made it very apparent. Lavish parties, luxurious homes, gorgeous brides - young brides at that. The whole reason they were all so young was to produce the next generation of millionaires to inherit the wealth and carry on the family name. Hopefully this one would allow him to do just that, but he had his suspicions she would not be so willing.

"You're a long way from home," The man murmured, stepping closer to her and wrapping an arm around her waist. "I'm glad you like it," He drew her closer still, trying to get her used to being close to him. He'd heard of wives who had blatantly refused to have any relations with their husbands, and he was determined not to let the girl—Maria—be one of those brides.

No bride of his would refuse him.

"I have, briefly." Sometimes, when he and his elder brother were younger, their father often took them up the coast to the beach. Other than that, he couldn't say he'd ventured very far, either. "I'm twenty. How old are you?" Five years left to pass on a legacy with this girl. Their hourglasses were running out.

          *

"I can do those things myself." Vivian said evenly, keen on keeping her independence if she couldn't keep her grip on much else. She didn't need a domestic to help her do ordinary, common things. Some of the brides might've been petty enough to enjoy being waited on hand and foot, but the Pyre girl had lived sixteen years doing such things herself, and she intended to keep it that way.

She hoped the man before her didn't plan on trying anything, even though she knew he probably did. The reason rich men bought young brides was for one purpose alone: having children. She wanted no hand in bringing in another generation with a short, quick, and unfulfilling lifespan, and had no interest in carrying a child that belonged to a man she already despised. All of the pretty clothes and soft carpets in the world couldn't convince her to let him touch her, and she was determined to hold to that promise.

Maria tensed almost immediately as Sawyer wrapped an arm around her small waist, not used to being held in such a way. She had never been with a boy before, never intimate with one either. And now the thought of marrying her betrothed tomorrow scared her more than ever. She didn't know this boy; she didn't know how he'd treat her or if he even came close to liking her.

"Fif-fifteen", she stuttered, looking up to catch Sawyer's eye. They had five years left, and now it was assumable that they would spend those years together. Maria doubted if she'd see the outside world again so she'd have to make do in this lavish prison, spending the last quarter of her life here in Florida.

              -

Thomas watched her with a keen eye the girl in front of him. By the sounds of her replies, she would be a difficult wife to manage and control. But he liked a challenge, and Miss Vivian Pyre seemed to be just that.

"I'm quite sure you are, miss. They also do tailoring and make you new clothes so I wouldn't dismiss them too quickly; that closet won't last you your whole time here." There was an obvious smirk on his face. This girl wasn't going anywhere so soon nor would he be too quick to discard her and look for another wife - he most certainly did not have time for that. He only had four years left and the time was ticking away.

He felt the small girl tense beneath his arm, and loosened his grip on her just a tad. "Did I frighten you?" He'd expected as much, but was hardly bothered. It was probably a lot harder for a young girl to come to terms with the marriage than for him, who was only concerned with having kids and enjoying himself before he died.

They'd die around the same time. Odds are, he'd go first. "Are you alright?" The man's brow furrowed slightly when he looked down at her, figuring he should feign concern to gain her trust. She obviously wasn't alright, but there wasn't much he could do for her.

          *

Vivian stared back defiantly, her chocolate eyes ablaze. Contrary to what her previous occupation implied, she was nowhere near easy. She'd done everything out of necessity, and now that she wasn't in danger of starving, the brunette didn't plan on returning to her old habits. They'd either put a bullet through her head or sell her back into prostitution if her fiancé had a problem with it, and she supposed she'd go down with what was left of her dignity or take up her old lifestyle if they sent her back.

"I'm not a material girl. Had a very... simple lifestyle. Nomadic, almost." The Pyre girl said vaguely, evading his assumption that the promise of new clothes would appeal to her. Granted, she wouldn't turn down the domestic's help, but she didn't need it. There was a type of smirk on the man's face that said she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon, but she ignored it.

[list][list]
"I-I-I'm fine", Maria reassured with a stutter, putting some space between herself and Sawyer. The poor girl had no idea how respond to another man's touch, so the arm around her waist was unsettling. But she was about to be married off, so she needed to get used to the sensation. Not only that, but she was pretty sure her fiance could feel her ribs through the peach colored dress. She didn't have much spare food to eat at home, so she went with what she had. And sometimes that was nothing. But she didn't want to give the impression that she was too malnourished to carry a child, knowing that would cause her to find herself in front of a gun if that happened.

"I'm just tired, that's all." A lie. She was well rested, truly. What she really was, well, she was starving. She hadn't eaten in at least a few days, but it wasn't really any different than normal. She was used to the hunger pains from a few days without food, but since they passed through the kitchen, her mouth had been watering.

          -

"Are you now?", Thom inquired. This girl seemed more intriguing by the minute. But she also seemed to refuse everything he said, everything he offered. That would be a problem, especially if his father found out or his brother. Lord, his brother would probably tease him for his wife's refusals day after day. But after long it will become harder and harder to refuse the luxuries and Thomas's advances.

"You must be hungry. You haven't eaten since you got here." The man thought aloud, letting his arm slip from around her. He offered her his arm again and once she'd taken it, he walked her back the way they'd come and into the kitchen. Sawyer gave a few brief orders to the nearest servant to havw a sort of brunch set up in the garden, and the boy left at once.

He was hungry himself, he realized. He, his brother, and his father had all been too concerned with the girls upstairs waking to remember to eat. The blond took his fiancé back into the garden and led her to a table, pulling out a chair for her and taking the one across from her. Not long after, the servant brought the food, and he grinned over at the girl. "I'm starving."

            *

"Nomadic? Hardly, since I can't go anywhere worthwhile without an escort." Her brown eyes narrowed in a sort of accusation, but her face returned to its neutral expression soon after. "How much did I cost?" The words rolled off her tongue in a sort insult, her eyebrows raised. Her outrage was evident and she made no move to hide it.

"What's the cost of a short human life, Thomas?" She pressed bitterly, clenching her fists to stop herself from throwing something like she'd done the lamp upstairs.

Maria was impressed with Sawyer so far. He was being quite the gentleman, and being just that: gentle. She surprised though, too. She didn't think by his stature that he was a gentle person by nature. Was he hiding something then? Restraining his impulses to do something completely unlike the behavior he was exhibiting now.

"Everything looks wonderful. Thank you", Maria grinned, looking up at the man across from her. In front of her there were plate on plate on plate of anything and everything the girl had dreamed of eating: scrambled eggs with cheese, sourdough toast, multiple kinds of butter and several more types of bread, biscuits smothered in gravy, sausage and bacon alike. Everything. But she restrained herself, careful not to look like she was a pig without manners. No, her father had taught her better than that, even if this was not the social situation he ultimately had in mind.

                -

Thomas wasn't going to lie, he was taken aback when the girl burst out at him. But he knew he had to control her quickly, otherwise this'd get out of hand. "It cost as much as any other. You know the money I-we paid wasn't for your life, but for the Gatherers." He was trying to calm her down, but there was no way in hell that he'd tell her how much she cost; he didn't want her getting any ideas about how she should adjust her attitude according to her price.

He doubted she'd had anything remotely similar to the food he'd had prepared for her back home. It didn't seem like she had any idea that the luxurious mansions with their colorful gardens and gourmet food were real, and not merely created to be shown on TV. All of it—the wives, the Gatherers—everything was extremely, incredibly real, and she'd probably never dreamed of getting sucked into it.

But really, she was lucky. When—if—she ever looked past the obvious losses, like being taken from home and never seeing her family again, she might see how fortunate she was. She was in better condition than the majority of people in the country, and unlike so many that were Gathered and killed or sold into prostitution, she'd come out virtually unscathed. And, depending on which way she looked at it, she got to marry him.

That last part was a joke, only thrown in as a way to humor himself. Marrying him was nothing special, just as marrying her was nothing special. Sawyer only wanted to marry and have children for his father's sake.

            *

"I know exactly what you paid for, and that particular Gatherer got exactly what he worked for, I promise you." She snarled, "And I know they only get paid for the girls that get selected. The rest, they sell to whore houses or slaughter. Or have their way with them, even. But don't even try telling me you only paid them for their efforts." She wasn't a naive girl in the least; she hadn't had the chance to be. "How much, Thomas?" She knew how much it cost to have a woman for a night, but for the rest of one's life? That was an entirely different story.

Maria didn't wait too much longer before she filled her plate with food, careful to make sure she didn't take too much of one thing - she wanted to taste it all. She had never had anything like this in her life before so she took her time eating, wanting to savor everything she ate. "Do you eat like this everyday?", she inquired, wondering if she'd get to enjoy this type of luxury for at least the rest of her life. She wasn't complaining - oh hell no - she was wondering. But she also wondered about all the other people out there who couldn't eat like this, wouldn't eat like this no matter how hard they tried. They would never be this filthy rich, and that made Maria feel the slightest bit guilty.

                -

This girl as pushing Thomas's last nerve and he couldn't keep his anger down anymore. "I pity you thinking that I would ever tell you your worth, no matter how low it actually is", he growled, green eyes lit with a fire from behind. The girl wasn't worth as much as the other one, Sawyer's wife. The other girl was younger, leaving her longer to produce more children than the other girl. And there was a high price on purity too, no doubt.

She seemed eager to try everything, and he briefly wondered what it felt like to not have what he had. Sawyer had never known hardship, or anything close to it. He'd been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and that same spoon remained in his mouth—and would—until the day he died. "Why, ofcourse. You will, too." If there was one thing other than the garden he knew his wife would enjoy, it would be the food.

            *

"I must be worth a lot, considering you chose me. Or are you implying that your standards are just that low?" His outburst was a double-sided sword. His green eyes were alive with anger, and she knew she was treading on thin ice. Sawyer's girl seemed younger, which made her worth more, but Vivian was stronger, and more likely to survive a childbirth gone awry. A small girl like her might not be ready to carry a child. She, unwilling as she was, was worth something despite being four years from death.

Maria nodded before starting to eat again, looking at the gardens around her. They were gorgeous, truly gorgeous. The colors around her were like nothing she'd seen before, so different from the dull look of the brownish-gray dirt that she found at home. Plants of all kinds grew around them, all kinds she never knew but was intrigued by.

The thought of spending the last of her days here comforted Maria, though the thought of it also being her personal prison killed her in one blow. How was she supposed to be happy when she would be forced to stay here because Lord knows she wouldn't leave to go into prostitution or dare to be killed in the same manner. She would have to find a way to survive, and who knows? Maybe Sawyer was kind and caring like seemed to act now.

                -

"You want to talk about low standards? I'm not the one who was selling myself, dear", Thomas spat, furious with the girl's behavior. He was wishing now for a girl that seemed to be as easy as the one his younger sibling had. Sawyer gets all the good things. "So you may want to look inside yourself before you start point fingers at others." And with that, the man left the room before he did something he'd regret, running a hand through his sandy blonde hair as he requested a servant to return Vivian back to her room.
