luna wrote:Juliet thought those jobs over in her mind.  She wouldn't mind being a medic - blood didn't really bother her - or cook too.  But this was her lot in life and she'd have to deal with it now.

"We don't always get things to go our way.  I guess I didn't", she replied with a shrug of her shoulders, washing the dishes in time.  She was stuck her it seemed, but there could be worse things.  Things like being a part of her platoon again.  Though they were dead now so it wouldn't matter too much.

*

"Well they weren't the ones caught with the bomb in their hands, now were they?", Knox snarled, eyes with an angry fire behind them.  "You were and you will pay as I see fit."  He glowered at the girl, taking her plate from her before she was finished, dumping what ever was left of the eggs and toast on her plate and placing the plate in the sink before he started gathering his jacket, keys, and wallet for the day.

jaded wrote:"Clearly not," The man murmured, watching as she washed the dishes. As long as she kept this up, maybe without the hiding in closets part, he wouldn't have much of a problem keeping her around. He wasn't sure what he'd do with her when he left the war, but he'd cross that bridge when he got to it.

-

The blonde glared up at him, grey eyes stormy.  "Bite me, Knox." She kept a straight face for a moment before breaking into a smirk. He had to leave, and soon she'd have the house to herself.  "Hey. I wasn't done with that." Avery gazed longingly at the food he'd dumped out, if only to point out how rude he'd been. She wasn't desperate enough to beg for more.

luna wrote:[ where should we head with them now? ]

*

"Boo-fucking-hoo", Knox growled as he grabbed onto the girl's wrist dragging her down the stairs behind him roughly - as if there was anyway to drag someone carefully.  He locked her down there in the basement, speaking through the door, "I'll be back after work.  You try to leave the basement and you'll wish you'd never left."

The girl theoretically should have been okay; the was a bathroom down there, bottled water too.  There wasn't any food but she'd be fine for eight hours at least.  After all, it wasn't like they would've fed her much more in a prison camp.  Knox was confident about leaving her down there - there were no windows for her to escape from or doors either; no way to get out besides digging a tunnel through ten inches of cement.

          [should we start another pair?]

The man jostled her down the stairs by her wrist and threw her back into the basement with a warning. The door eas locked. What'd he expect her to do, burn it down? While that might've been appealing if she had something to set it on fire with, but it also wouldn't be logical. As reckless as she was, Sage knew better.

The blonde sauntered over to the corner of the basement, kicking things to keep herself occupied. Something clattered to the ground that sounded like metal, and she dug around until she'd located the object: a metal part that must've come off of a piece of equipment. Avery slid to the ground, back against the wall, and pushed it behind her, figuring it couldn't hurt to have something for when Knox came back.

Eight or so hours later Knox came back and work was done for the day. Thank God. As soon as he returned he changed clothes, not wishing to stay in his uniform any longer than he had to. He hated war. He hated his job. If it wasn't for the stupid draft he could've been in school, working towards a degree and a better life. But he was forever going to be stuck in this situation of the unrest of war.

[yeah]

-

Avery jolted out of her light sleep against the wall when she heard the door open and close upstairs, and groggily felt around for the metal piece she'd collected earlier. Finding that it was still there, she tucked it into her back pocket and picked at the laces of her boots, figuring Knox might think something was up if she didn't look perpetually and utterly bored.

"Shit" was all Leila could manage to say before puking right then and there. She must've been hit in the head because it was pounding with the heartbeat that rung in her ears. Her eyes were covered (surprise, surprise) and she was sitting in a cool room with her hand cuffed behind her back.

Outside she knew it was hot, though, so she had to be inside some kind of building. And deep inside it for that matter. The heat was the kind that would sink in through any and all wall no matter the material, but there was no trace of the heat here. Just nice, cold air condition.

-

Knox stared absent-mindedly at the basement door. He wasn't sure whether or not to let the girl out or to just let her rot down there. But that would leave a smell, and the smell of rotting human flesh is said to be the worst so let her out it was.

He sighed, standing and shuffling towards the door, taking the chain off and unbolting and unlocking the door before opening tentatively. Knox needed to be on guard; this girl was clever and wouldn't leave him a moment to regret trusting her or underestimating her either.

The most recent catch had been the easiest. Callan Jenkins was rarely unable to bring in a prisoner, and the Western girl he'd gone for this time hadn't put up as much of a fight as he'd hoped. Without a fight. It was rather boring. "Number 134 has been successfully detained. I.D. Says Leila D'Agostino. Yeah, some Western name. Search the database for more details, check to see if it's valid or fake." She'd been found dangerously close to the premises, but not on it.

Nothing more than a number to him, a body, another sucess. She'd end up with an officer or in the camps, or he'd keep her around if he liked (he probably wouldn't), and he couldn't have cared less. Bringing people in was his job. Don't kill. Detain. And so, he did. He unlocked the room the girl was being kept in and stepped in, unceremoniously making his way over with long strides and released the cuff that held her to a pole, only to snap it down on her uncuffed wrist. He pulled her up without a word and half-dragged her into the light. His radio blared out orders for another officer, and he tuned it out, focused on shoving her into an interrogation room and sitting down. "Come on. Let's get this over with. It's almost my lunch hour. Name?" He already knew it, but it was standard protocol.

          -

The sound of a chain moving, bolts shifting, and the door unlocking brought an almost innocent smirk to her face. Knox's face appeared in the doorway, and she resisted the strong urge to wave hello. "How was work, Grumps?" She pulled herself up into a standing position and made her way to the door, nearly tripping over a few wires on her way there.

The blonde made it to the doorway and slipped out under his arm, jogging upstairs and into the kitchen before he could haul her back down. She couldn't have cared less about running. That was for another day. She was hungry, famished, even, and didn't have time for formalities.

"Leila", she said nonchalantly as she leaned back in the cold metal chair with her cuffed hands. She hated patrols but it was her turn to take a shift. And now she hated patrols even more.

-

"Do you really care?" Knox watched as the girl ducked under his arm, speeding off to the kitchen. He could've cared less about her eating his food, but he had to keep a close eye so he followed her, grabbing a beer from the fridge as he went.

"I'm goingto need a last name, sweetheart." Probably the most inconvenient part of his job was dealing with prisoners like her, who weren't familiar with the protocol or just didn't give a damn. "Age, rank, squadron and squadron leader, as well." He had much better things to do.

          -

"No. Which, by the way, will you ever give me an actual room to sleep in? And a shower?" She dug around in his pantry until she withdrew with two slices of bread. After grabbing cold cuts from the fridge, Avery prepared herself a sandwich and sat down to eat it with little worry about asking for permission.

Leila rolled her eyes. She didn't mind getting out of patrols, even if she was interrogation with the enemy; she could honestly care less about this war - she hated it and that was the end of that. But she wasn't going to put up with this guy patronizing her. "It's D'Agostino, not 'sweetheart'." She glowered at the man across the table with her light brown eyes. "Sixteen, private first class, Squad two-twenty-four lead by some misogynistic douche."

          -

"At some point, yes. The shower takes more precedence for me. I'm not going to stick around with a smelly prisoner in my basement." Knox looked through the food for something eat, finding a box of cereal and eat it straight from there. He could care less about manners as Avery showed too. "Shower's upstairs to the left. There should be some soap up there and a towel or two."

Leila D'Agostino, not sweetheart. God, she was asking for it. "Your manners are severely lacking. That 'misogynistic douche' is probably the reason you got yourself caught. Now—tell me what you know." Using truth serum on her wouldn't be a problem. She seemed more or less apathetic, unless it was an act.

          -

Avery nodded, grey eyes narrowing slightly. "I need clothes." She was still dressed in her western uniform, the color of blood, and as much as she hated to say it, she couldn't keep wearing it forever. But his instructions about where to find soap and towels were nice. At least he wasn't stupid enough not to give her that much. "And I don't smell. You do." She said matter-of-factly, finishing off the sandwich rather quickly.

"You honestly think they trusted me with any valuable information?" Leila's eyes narrowed as she stared down her interrogator. "In the patriarchal society of military, you think they would trust a women with any information?" And the truth was they didn't. It was their loss, really. Women were renowned for keeping secrets and just being secretive in general - perfect material for militants.

          -

Hudson sat perched on his haunches, binoculars raised to watch a girl slowly coming closer and closer toward their hidden camp, ready to attack. She looked familiar though, the girl dressed in blue, like he'd seen her before. But then he realized, he had. Well, not her, but her brother, the leader of his squadron's rival. They had brought him in weeks back with everyone in the East thinking he was dead as a fish in the desert, but the West couldn't have that. No, no. They wouldn't have so much information go to waste so easily.

"Commander come in, commander come in. Over." He needed permission before he could move in, but with a target like the one in front of him, he was sure that he'd receive it.

Callan leaned back in his chair, releasing a long, exaggerated sigh. He didn't feel like being lectured bt the patriarchal society that was the military by a random Western prisoner. "God damn. I don't need all that. Just tell me anything. Coordinates, missions, anything. I know you're not completely and utterly clueless, and I don't care to hear you rant about not being told much."

          -

Her muscles burned and her lungs screamed for air, but her adrenaline carried her forward. She'd raced the sun thus far, and intended to make it back to camp before the sun rose much higher in the sky. Her brother hated when she ran. He'd told her it'd be the death of her one day, and she knew what he said made sense, but all she'd ever had to say to him was, "Not today." And now he was gone—shot down by a Western patrol, and there was no one to try and stop her from running. For that reason, she ran harder. She was too out of breath to cry. The border line was quickly approaching, and she began to slow, ready to turn and loop back to camp before too many people noticed she was gone.

"54.378 degrees west, 211.4105 degrees east. That's where out last camp was. We move a lot though. Always to the east before the west." She helped in scouting locations for their next base camp to set up, but other than that, she didn't exactly do much, but they didn't let her anyway.

          -

"Target identified: Piper Pyre. Permission to tranquilizer. Over." Moments later he was given an enthusiastic response, giving him the go-ahead to hopefully bring him one step closer to the tops of the ranks.

He loaded his gun, a sedation bullet placed into the magazine before he took his aim. He took his stance low in the tall grasses, watching her as she ran. One. Two. Shoot. And down she went.

Callan scribbled the coordinates down in a messy handwriting, dropping the pen and crossing his arms over his chest once he'd finished. "Anything else? How many of your patrol are in the area?" Her apathetic attitude was a bit tok annoying. It wasn't normal not to care at all.
Even the most careless soldiers got a bit antsy when taken in.

          -

When she reached her usual turnaround point, she looped sround the small stick in the ground and ran back the way she'd come with long, easy strides. She'd made it a few feet back before something pierced her leg, sending what felt like lead through her veins and turning her limbs to stone. She tried to reach for her gun, but her arm wouldn't respond, and found herself, crashing to the ground without being able to brace herself. Piper's cheek made contact with the ground with a jolt, sending blood slowly oozing out of her nose, but her eyes were forcibly closing before she could bring a hand up to wipe it away.

"Twenty. Maybe thirty." Leila stared at her nails, cleaning under them and picking at the a stray hangnail here and there. "Any more questions?", she looked up at him with some surefire sass, her neck making a little movement that you wouldn't ever dare to do in front of your mother.

          -

Hudson chuckled, hitting his partner's shoulder. "Never saw it coming." He picked up his radio, telling the commander the target had been neutralized. Soon someone came out, scooping her and the two up into a van and taking them back to the large building that housed the squadron.

"No. You're not much help." He called someone in to take the information away and bring back coordinates of possible camps to send her to, havig decided he wasn't keen on keeping her around. "Done being a smartass?"

          -

Nathaniel Heck straightened, rising when someone came in to tell him that Lawrence and his partner had managed to spot and take in Piper Ingram, the second of the infamous Western twins. The first was assumed dead by his squadron, and treated as such by theirs. The East was losing its best members left and right, and Heck could already see the collapse of the weak blue empire soon enough. The blonde strode down to meet the two soldiers and the prisoner, his usually bored expression replaced with one of mild interest.

"Not really." Leila scrunched her nose up, giving Callan her iconic smirk. He shouldn't have given her the option of being done, because Lord knows she wouldn't stop anytime soon if she had the choice.

          -

The two waited for Nat to arrive. Good Lord did he take his time. But with their target in a wheelchair, her hands handcuffed to an armrest, they weren't in too much of a hurry. The blues would be though. They were struggling already and now another leader was gone. They'd most certainly be scrambling now.

"They'll just starve you for that in the camps. Keep it up." Someone stepped in with more information and he took the paper, scanning it for any details of interest. "Any siblings?" He wasn't done, after all. He'd forgotten to ask that.

          -

The two soldiers and their catch came into his line of sight, and when he finally reached them, he looked down at the girl, still in a haze, and clapped the two on the back. "She was alone?" The brunette began to stir, her fists clenching snd unclenching. Groggily, her grey eyes slowly opened, but didn't widen. "Was she on our side of the line?"

"None." Leila was lying through her teeth and well too. There was no way in hell that they'd get their hands on her sister. Not now, not ever.

          -

"Barely. Just crossed over it as she was turning around on her run." Hudson watched the heavy-lidded girl raise her head, but he could tell he still wasn't with it which he could only expect after using enough tranquilizer to sedate a damn elephant.

Callan watched her closely, deciding to push further. "Not even a step sibling? Why? Parents had trouble having you?" She was awfully sassy for an only child. Someone had to teach it to her or make her that way, and he doubted she'd learned it all on her own.

          -

Nathaniel nodded, circling the wheelchair to look at the girl. Her face was cut up slightly from her fall, and there were several cuts on her legs. "Armed?" Her eyes flickered around the room, not really settling on anyone or anything in particular. She started pulling at the handcuffs. "Get her inside before she wakes up completely."

"Shame their only daughter managed to get herself stuck in the East. If only they'd raised her smarter. I'll search the D'Agostino name in the database, though. Don't you worry." He waited for any kind of reaction that would reveal whether she was lying or not.

          -

Heck nodded, satisfied with what the two had done. He followed them in, leaning against the wall just as the girl seemed to come out of her daze, pulling harder on the restraints. Her grey eyes unclouded gradually and hardened. "Afternoon, Ingram." Her jaw clenched slightly. "Heck."

"You're telling me." Leila scoffed. "And you won't find anything. Nothing decent anyway." She knew he was testing her. They had practiced for these kinds of things. It wasn't exactly the same though - of course. This time, everything was on the line: life, liberty, and property. And the pursuit of happiness - that too.

          -

Hudson and Lawrence watched from opposing walls, standing behind the wheelchair. Hudson particularly found the relationship between the two rivaling squads interesting. Why would enemies bother to learn each others' names? Wouldn't that make them feel more guilt if one of their actions end one of their enemies' lives, by putting a name to stick in their brain and taunt them in the midnight hours?

"Nothing decent?" Callan echoed, "So I'll find one of your indecent relatives?" He'd search regardless of what she said. It was normal for people to claim they were only children to save their siblings.

          -

Nathaniel pulled his gun from its holster and stepped forward to take off her handcuffs. The girl stood, rubbing her wrists, and pushed the wheelchair away with her foot, crossing her arms over her chest. "I never crossed the line, and I wasn't trying to attack. I was on a run. Why the commotion?"

"Hudson says you overstepped the boundary."

"No, you'll find other D'Agostinos, just not ones I'm related to." She prayed and hoped he wouldn't find her sister, a thirteen-year-old who Leila knew was terrified to join the ranks. She didn't want them grabbing her now, let alone ever.

          -

"You were over the line by close to three feet." Hudson crossed his arms over his chest, looking at the Ingram twin as he leaned against the wall.

Declan chimed in. "You made a bigger loop this time than you have in past. Happens to the best of us." He carried a smug grin though. He wasn't sorry at all for bringing her in. She was here now and that was more than likely where she'd stay.
