Vivian rolled out of bed the next morning sore and padded, grumbling to the bathroom to dig around for the pill bottle she'd hidden. She poured one into her hands and tipped it back with a gulp of water. Suddenly wanting to move around but not willing to risk running into Thomas, the girl made her own bed and paced around the room, picking up stray objects and putting them in their place. Then she wandered into the closet and tried to pick something out without much enthusiasm.

Ofcourse everything looked good. The head cook was a fanatic. But he didn't say that, figuring it didn't really matter. Besides, the girl had probably never had anything remotely close to this at home. Was the newness of it all still shocking her after months? Sawyer watched his excitable wife with mild interest before sliding a steak onto his plate. Thomas and Vivian were absent. He wondered if that was a good sign or a disaster warning.

A knock on the door made her dark eyes roll, and she strode over to open it just a crack. A servant boy, maybe a little younger than Sawyer. A key card hung around his neck, and that was all she focused on when he asked to come in. "Absolutely," The sixteen year old murmured, watching him place a tray of food on the table with undisguised interest. She slinked closer to him and ran a hand down his arm, waiting for a reaction. "Surely you've got better things to do than go back to your duties." The servant boy turned to look down at her, seemingly surprised by her actions. "I must, Miss." Vivian placed her hands on his chest so that they were close to they key card, and grinned. "Stay. I'm House Governor Thomas's wife and I want you to stay."

"But you're his wife—"

"I never signed a marriage contract. Stay." The brunette sneered, slipping the wedding band off and discarding it on the table.

After they'd eaten, Sawyer sat back and regarded her curiously. "You and Thomas's wife—are you two friends?" If Vivian had confided in Maria, though he doubted she would, Thomas could possibly have something to dangle over his wife's head. A long shot, he knew, but it wasn't his problem.

Weeks later, and she hadn't let the servant near her to reclaim his key card. Or his dignity, though she wasn't sure he'd get that back simply by revisiting her. She'd gotten what she wanted with little cost, but Thomas had seen, and if he saw it again, the servant wouldn't need a key card any longer. Did hell have key card access? She had to wonder. Whatever. She was more than prepared. The key was tucked safely in her back pocket, and she lay draped over an armchair in the library, waiting for some kind of nuisance to come and disturb the peace. Like her husband, undoubtedly flustered with anger or frustration—any kind. Weeks had passed since they'd tried again, and nothing—soon enough, he'd assume something was wrong, that she couldn't have kids, or that he couldn't. The pills were well-hidden, and whenever her stock grew meager, one of the servants could be trusted to get her more in secret. Soon enough, Thomas would realize he'd wasted money stealing her freedom for nothing; he wouldn't get his heir.

"Does she ever... tell you anything? About her past, about her and Thom—anything?" The firecracker of a girl, too wild for his brother to effectively tame, didn't seem like she'd confide in the compliant lamb of a wife he'd acquired. Opposites attracted, but somehow he knew Vivian was already expecting them to turn to Maria for information. He was incredibly glad he'd chosen a decent girl instead of a brazen one.

Vivian simply greeted the man and his pet name with a cold glare, not even bothering to move so that he had a place to sit with her. He could find his own. He didn't have to be up her ass for the rest of her four years of life. And she wanted to say so, but she was sure his response would involve something about an heir. Maybe she'd get more peace if she bore an heir. Part of her figured it wouldn't be worth it.

"Just... the basics. Where's she from? Who are her parents? And what about her and Thom? Just anything she might've told you." Maybe Maria's innocence could be of decent use yet. If Vivian believed she had no malicious intent (and really, she didn't), she could've ended up giving away valuable information. Depending on what it was, Sawyer had to decide whether to tell Thom.

"She doesn't talk about her parents; I don't think she's even mentioned them once before"

"She's from the scarlet district, but I'm sure you could figure that out. Her relationship with Thom, well . . . ."

She scoffed, "You're not my husband." Legally, she supposed she was, but that was merely on paper. As far as Vivian was concerned, she wasn't married to anyone, didn't belong to anyone. Her ring finger had been freed from the clutches of her wedding band, and she didn't bother trying to hide it. "What do you want? I'm not in the mood for what you want—whatever it is."

She never spoke about her parents. She was, as he'd thought, from a scarlet district. And by the sound of it, the things she had to say about Thom were less than kind. "And has she said anything about not getting pregnant? Or is she, and just not showing or bothering to tell Thom?"

"You still haven't managed to bear a child. You and I both know what needs to happen."

So that's what he's getting at.

"She hasn't really said much. Vivian asks about mine, but I have a hard time reading her when I tell her of the pregnancy."

"It's not going to happen. You tried, you got what you bargained for, but it's over." She'd never agreed to letting him keep putting his hands on her forever, had she? Certainly not. Regardless, she wanted nothing to do with him. "Cut your losses. Adopt." His brother had an heir. Why was one from him necessary?

Sawyer had to wonder if his wife was protecting the other girl. Didn't she know that Vivian would probably give information up about her if it meant helping herself? He let out a long sigh. "No matter, I suppose. Thom's got himself a wild card."

"Until I have definitive proof that you can't carry a child to term, I'm not going to stop. You can talk to the housemaster about finding that out if you'd like."

"An understatement, really."

"I think I'm going to head to bed. Can you have one of the servants bring me some more pillows like I had mentioned earlier?"

"The housemaster has no goddamn right, and neither do you." Vivian said plainly. "It'd be wise of you to stop while you're ahead, Thomas." Even if she had to fight him for some type of say, she'd have it.

"Ofcourse. I'll walk you up." He gave the order to a nearby servant to meet them there with the pillows she wanted, and placed a hand on the small of her back to steady her. "You should be due soon."

"Now, if you'll excuse me," She stood, brushed imaginary dust from her jeans, and cringed slightly when her hand made contact with the key card in her back pocket. The sixteen year old headed for the door like nothing had happened, and glanced back at the man before she turned the corner. "Don't come to my room."

Sawyer walked her to her room once the elevator opened, and deposited her safely inside. Maria, he knew, would probably find a way to get hurt whilst walking five feet from the elevator to her room without him there; she seemed fragile, and terribly accident-prone. A few dropped glasses showed it. As he called for extra pillows for his wife, he couldn't help but think it was better she do such things by accident than on purpose like her older counterpart.

Vivian watched, amused, as the girl quickly silenced a servant who told her to sit down and be served. The stubborn blonde stood, picked up a scone, plopped it down on her plate, and before she had time to triumphantly sink back down into her wheelchair, her water broke. Lovely. The sixteen year old calmly stood, having witnessed labor and births back home, and barked out orders at the servants. "Tell the Housemaster to have a room ready. Notify Sawyer. And you—take her upstairs. We have time, but make it fast."

Sawyer glanced at his brother over a newspaper proclaiming the dreadful state of the country, ready to open his mouth, but was interrupted when a servant rushed in without knocking and announced that Lady Maria had gone into labor. When had they begun calling her that? He stood, brushed his pants off, and followed the servant out without checking to see if Thomas would follow.

Vivian followed them upstairs and into the room, watching as the servants lifted her up and out of the wheelchair and onto the bed. The Housemaster, a doctor, she heard, hurried in and took over, and the brunette was forced to take a seat near the window while everything was set up.

Ofcourse he was ready for a kid. He needed an heir, and soon enough, he'd have one, and after that, more. "Damn right. When'll it be your turn?" At the rate things were going, Thomas would never have an heir. His luck was terrible, it seemed.

The room was quickly set up with screens and systems displaying her vitals and her child's vitals as well. Some even displayed a full body scan that showed the child's position and possible problematic areas. With her heartbeat beeping in the background, Maria groaning as another contraction set in. "Viv-", she started saying before groaning even louder, toes curling as her body wracked with pain. "Will you tell . . . . Sawyer . . . to hurry-ow-the hell up?" If he wasn't here soon she was gonna have a bone to pick with him and wouldn't care if she was only here on his terms.

Thomas didn't even reply. He just glared. He knew he was running out of time, but he didn't need his brother reminding him that his life was soon to come to an end and he needed to only have one child to fulfill his father's wishes - something he had to do before he died.

Maria asked her to tell Sawyer to hurry the hell up, and the brunette nodded, happy to oblige. She quicklt strided to the door and swung out, calling out to the two brothers down the hall. "Maria wants you to hurry the hell up!" After being met with a glare from the younger brother, she ducked back into the room with a wave of satisfaction and returned to her seat.

His older brother was glowering at him, but he hardly acknowledged him. He had better things to worry about than Thom's anger. His success as a son depended on Maria's delivery, and he could deal with his brother another time. Heeding Vivian's smug warning, he hurried into the room and rushed to Maria's side.

Maria's temperature was slowly starting climb as the hours ticked on, labor continuing for six more hours before she was even close to delivering, another side effect of having a child at such a young age. The housemaster had finally said she was ready, prepping her for the moment they had all been waiting for. He told her to start pushing and she did, her face bunched up and eyes clenched shut as she groaned in pain. She squeezed Sawyer's hand with bone crushing possibility; she was small, but in times like these, she could Hulk-out like no one else.

Thomas staying in the room, sitting opposite of Vivian. They didn't talk, they just sat there, waiting for the kid to freakin' come.

Didn't she just have to push a few times to get the kid out?
Man does she have him whipped.
Why does she sound like she's constipated?
How is she not crying?
Why is Vivian looking at Sawyer like that? All thoughts and question that popped into his head as they endured the hours leading up to the one that mattered most.

Vivian watched Maria from afar, the Housemaster occadionally obstructing her vision. He wouldn't let her die. Not while she was still capable of having children. He needed heirs, and that meant Maria was much more valuable than she seemed. No, he'd do anything in his power to keep her and the baby alive. The thought crossed her mind that if she hadn't been taking her pills, she'd be next, and all guilt she'd been harborinf evaporated.

Sawyer held Maria's hand for hours, not willing to leave her side and also unable. He was sure that if she squeezed any harder, she'd break his hand, and he hadn't thought such a feat was possible for Maria. She was too small and weak for that. But now, in her weakest moment, she was stronger than ever. They'd have a son and he'd have a crushed hand.

A few pushes later and the couple's healthy baby boy was born. Thank God. Maria wasn't sure how much more she could take. She felt only marginally better with the child out of her, but she sighed in relief anyway. But she didn't hear any crying, an instant sign that something was wrong. "Why-why isn't he crying?" her voice was panicked. She didn't go through nine months of labor just to have the little boy die after birth. No, no, no, no, NO.

The housemaster reassured her, and a moment later the baby began to cry. She relaxed in that moment, melting into the pillows that propped up her back. She turned to Sawyer, releasing her death grip on his hand as she asked about her baby boy whom they were cleaning up in the moment. "How does he look?"

Thomas wasn't sure to be horrified to queasy or both. Let's just say he didn't really want to see any newborn baby for awhile. Those things were ugly ass goop piles.

Once the baby was born, the young mother almost gave herself a heart attack when he didn't immediately begin to cry. The Housemaster took him from her with reassuring words, and after a few more moments, the baby began its wailing. Happy to hear him screaming, the young girl relaxed and released her husband's hand. Vivian couldn't see herself holding Thomas's to begin with.

After the initial fear of a stillborn birth being squashed, his wife released his hand and he let out a breath of relief. Maria asked how he looked, and in all honesty, or rather, literally, the baby hardly looked human, but he knew that wasn't true. It was his son, and that in itself made the baby beautiful. "Handsome."
